Ingrid Daniell is a painter and visual artist whose work is deeply rooted in the landscapes that shape her life. Dividing her time between lutruwita / Tasmania and Wadawurrung Country on the Surf Coast of Victoria, Daniell draws inspiration from these environments, immersing herself in their unique elements, atmospheres and rhythms. Her practice reflects a deep attentiveness to nature; translating memory, emotion, and connection into richly layered visual experiences.
Exploring themes of time, deep time, awe, spirituality, and our instinctive need to connect with nature, Daniell’s work serves as both a meditation and a response to the environmental crisis. The landscape is her constant muse; a symbol of resilience and fragility and a lens through which she processes climate anxiety. Her paintings hold space for reflection on the tension between the vulnerability of the Earth and the human longing for belonging and transcendence.
Daniell’s distinctive style fuses atmospheric layering with abstracted forms and folk-inspired details. Her use of bold colour, expressive brushwork, and textured surfaces evokes a sense of awe and mystery; an invitation to experience the sacredness of the natural world. Through sheer washes, dimensional textures, and symbolic mark-making, she captures the fleeting and ethereal qualities of land, sea, and sky. Motifs such as shells, wattle, and stars often emerge in her work, connecting personal memory with collective symbolism.
Titling her works in prose, Daniell weaves intention into every piece. Her titles, like her paintings, are poetic and layered; enhancing the emotional and conceptual depth of her practice. While grounded in her own lived experience, her landscapes remain open and ambiguous, allowing space for the viewer’s own interpretation and emotional resonance.
Daniell holds a Bachelor of Arts in Textiles and Fashion (majoring in Costume Design), completed at RMIT University, Melbourne, in 1993. Her background in costume and fabric continues to inform her approach to colour, texture, and drama. Since transitioning into painting, she has exhibited regularly in both solo and group exhibitions across Australia and recently LA.
Daniell’s work is widely collected through out Australia both private and public and internationally; including private collectors in New York, Los Angeles, India and London.
